It soon joins the pathway of the larger lingual nerve, a branch of the mandibular nerve.

The mandibles are controlled by the stimulation of two large sensory neurons that project through the sensory mandibular nerve into the suboesophageal ganglion.

It then proceeds anteriorly to exit the skull via the foramen ovale along with the mandibular nerve component of CN V ( V3 ).

The most common long-term complications are loss of sensation in the mandibular nerve, malocclusion and loss of teeth in the line of fracture.

Upon exiting the skull, the lesser petrosal nerve synapses in the otic ganglion, which is suspended from the mandibular nerve immediately below the foramen ovale.

Behind and lateral to the foramen rotundum is the foramen ovale, which transmits the mandibular nerve, the accessory meningeal artery, and the lesser superficial petrosal nerve.

The ganglion'hangs'by two nerve filaments from the lower border of the lingual nerve ( itself a branch of the mandibular nerve, CN V 3 ).

The mandibular nerve immediately passes between tensor veli palatini, which is medial, and meningeal branch ( nervus spinosus ) and the nerve to medial pterygoid from its medial side.

It occasionally ossifies, and in such cases, between its upper border and the base of the skull, a foramen is formed which transmits the branches of the mandibular nerve to the muscles of mastication.

The motor root runs in front of and medial to the sensory root, and passes beneath the ganglion; it leaves the skull through the foramen ovale, and, immediately below this foramen, joins the mandibular nerve.
